Jenny Diski (född Simmonds) växte upp i London som enda barnet i en judisk invandrarfamilj. Hennes far, James Simmonds (född Israel Zimmerman) lämnade familjen när Jenny var sex år, vilket gjorde att hennes mor, Rene (född Rachel Rayner) fick ett nervöst sammanbrott.
